A tiny village at the foothills of West Jaintia hills in Meghalaya, is the birth place of world's finest variety of Haldi. Lakadong Turmeric has high curcumin content of more than 7%, as against 2-3% found in regular varieties available in the market.
Curcumin is a miracle compund known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and renders yellowish orange color to the spice. The higher the curcumin, more prized the turmeric is. Curcumin protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.
1. Sowing of seeds: Seed rhizomes of Lakadong Turmeric are sown into the pit and covered with the soil.
2. Harvesting: Clusters of rhizomes are dug out with hoes. Each cluster of rhizome usually carries 8-12 finger rhizomes of Lakadong turmeric.
3. Washing, Slicing and Drying: Rhizomes are washed with water, cut into slices and finally dried in a solar dehydrator.
4. Grinding: Finally, the dried slices are grounded to powder in a grinder.
The entire farming is traditional and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. In fact, the black alluvial soil is so fertile that there’s no need for fertilizers in the first place.

Add one spoon of turmeric powder in water. let it rest for 10-15 mins. Pure turmeric will settle at the bottom and water will be clear yellowish. Impure or adultered turmeric will make the water cloudy by forming a dark yellow stain.
